Iron Berry Puree or Smoothie

Move over baby rice porridge, there’s a healthier alternative on the block – pumpkin seed meal! Pumpkin seed meal is a great alternative (or it could be something you can add with rice porridge if you choose) to give your bubba a nice big dose of essential nutrients their little bodies can use up.

Pumpkin seeds are really little nutrient powerhouses particularly with the minerals our babies and toddlers need to grow and develop – iron, zinc, magnesium and they’re rich in protein.

Because this is a plant based source of iron, it’s not as readily absorbed as iron from animal sources, but paired with the vitamin c rich berries we’ve still got a nice dose of iron here for our little ones.

This will make around 3 x 120g serves (the same as a pouch) so depending on your Bub and the size meal they like, you want to add some mashed avocado, egg yolk or serve 2. You could also double batch this and freeze.

Remember that it does have those beautiful healthy fats from the coconut milk and the protein from the pumpkin seeds so it’s going to be much more nutritionally dense and filling than a regular pouch.

It’s also great as a smoothie for us mamas and toddlers too (in a larger serve of course)!

How to make pumpkin seed meal

Ideally you’ll soak the seeds for a few hours, let them dry and then whiz them into a fine meal in the NutriBullet / food processor.

Buutttt if that isn’t in the schedule just skip to the blending into a meal /flour consistency part. It’s still going to be 100 x better than the packaged baby rice porridge.
